God of 40

Today, we celebrate Ascension Thursday – a Holy Day of Obligation that marks the moment Jesus, forty days after rising from the dead, ascended into heaven in the presence of His disciples. At first glance, it might seem like a peaceful goodbye. But in reality, this moment is a turning point, one foretold in Scripture’s consistent pattern of 40’s. In fact, you could say that God is the God of 40 – and what comes after.

Let’s take a look at that pattern. The number 40 in the Bible often symbolizes a time of testing, preparation, purification, or waiting. It’s never arbitrary. It’s pregnant with purpose – divinely orchestrated to shape the hearts of those who endure it. And it’s what comes after the 40 that brings the change.

Let’s explore this holy rhythm:

The Pattern of 40 in Scripture

Noah and his family waited out the flood for 40 days of rain (Genesis 7:12). On day 41, the water began to recede, and God’s plan for renewal began. Moses lived in the wilderness of Midian for 40 years before being called to lead (Acts 7:30). On year 41, God spoke to him from a burning bush and launched a divine rescue mission. The Israelites wandered the desert for 40 years (Numbers 14:33-34). On year 41, they crossed the Jordan River into the Promised Land. Goliath taunted Israel for 40 days before David stepped onto the battlefield (1 Samuel 17:16). On day 41, the shepherd boy defeated the giant with a stone and sling. Jesus fasted in the wilderness for 40 days, tempted by the devil (Matthew 4:2). On day 41, He began His public ministry.

This is not coincidence. This is God’s rhythm. A divine pattern that stretches through history and continues with Christ’s Ascension.

The Ascension: Day 40

For 40 days after the Resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples (Acts 1:3). He comforted them, taught them, and prepared them. He reminded them of everything He had said and done, opening their eyes to Scripture, and commissioning them for the work ahead.

But then – on Day 40 – He ascended.

It was not a retreat. It was a transition.

The disciples were left standing, looking up, perhaps confused, maybe even a little afraid. Their Teacher was gone again. But in that moment, everything had changed.

God Moves on Day 41

If 40 is the number of waiting, of wrestling, of wondering – then 41 is the number of fulfillment.

Jesus’ Ascension on the 40th day wasn’t the end – it was the setup. Just like with Noah, Moses, David, and the Israelites, God was about to move.

On Day 41, the disciples were praying in the upper room. On Day 50, Pentecost would arrive – the Holy Spirit would descend like fire, and the Church would be born.

But it was on Day 41 that the next chapter began. The waiting ended, and the mission started.

God doesn’t forget those who wait on Him. He sanctifies the wait. He ordains the 40. But He moves in 41.

What This Means for You Today

You may be in your own “40” right now.

40 days (or months… or years) of longing for something to change. 40 seasons of prayers that seem unanswered. 40 moments of discouragement, confusion, or silence from God.

But if Scripture shows us anything, it’s this:

God is never absent in the 40. And He is always active in the 41.

The Ascension is proof that Jesus did not abandon His people. He ascended to send us something better – His Spirit. He ascended to take His seat at the right hand of the Father, to intercede for us (Romans 8:34), and to prepare a place for us (John 14:2-3).

This Holy Day reminds us that the waiting is not wasted. Forty is real. And hard. But forty is not forever.

Final Thought: Live in 41

We are an Ascension people.

That means we are a Day 41 people – we live not just in the shadow of the Cross, but in the power of the Resurrection and the hope of the Ascension. We are no longer wandering or wondering. We are sent, filled with the Spirit, walking in the victory Jesus has already won.

So if you’re in the 40 – hold on. Press in. God is not done.

Because in 41, the story changes.
